Meghalaya Human Rights Commission Probes Assault on Labourers at JN Stadium Renovation Site

Northeast Desk, 11th July: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has initiated an investigation into the assault of labourers working on the renovation of the JN Stadium in Shillong. Acting on its own initiative, the Commission has issued a notice to the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills District, demanding a comprehensive report within two weeks.

The assault occurred on July 9 and involved labourers from a Delhi-based firm tasked with paving work at the stadium. Members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) allegedly attacked the workers while purportedly checking their labour licenses.

In response, the Meghalaya Police have registered a suo motu case and commenced an investigation into the incident.

The assault has raised concerns among the affected workers, casting doubt on whether they will continue the stadium renovation. This disruption threatens the preparations for the 133rd edition of the Durand Cup, set to begin on July 27, with Shillong hosting one of the group stages of Asia’s oldest football tournament.
