President Draupadi Murmu Flags Off 133rd Durand Cup with Trophy Tour Launch

National Desk, 11th July: President Draupadi Murmu inaugurated the 133rd edition of the historic Durand Cup at the Rashtrapati Bhawan Cultural Centre, unveiling the tournament trophies and initiating the trophy tour. This event upholds the presidential tradition of supporting the tournament, a practice started by India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

In her address, President Murmu emphasized football’s global appeal and the excitement it brings to players and fans alike. She extended her best wishes to all participants in the upcoming matches.

The ceremony saw the attendance of top military officials, including Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, and Vice Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh. Lt. Gen. Ram Chander Tiwari, patron of the tournament, expressed gratitude for the President’s involvement, underscoring the event’s importance for Indian football and Armed Forces traditions.

Prominent figures from sports and entertainment, such as footballer Sunil Chhetri and actor John Abraham, attended the ceremony, along with representatives from host states and tournament sponsors.

The Durand Cup, Asia’s oldest football tournament, will kick off on July 27 in Kolkata, with matches also scheduled in Kokrajhar, Shillong, and Jamshedpur. Last year’s edition saw Mohun Bagan Super Giant clinch the title, defeating East Bengal FC in the final.

Organized by the Indian Army on behalf of the three Services, the Durand Cup has been a cornerstone of Indian football since 1888, fostering top talent and awarding three trophies to its champions.
