Meghalaya: One dead as incessant rains cause landslides, damage

Guwahati: One person was killed in a landslide in the East Khasi Hills area of Shillong in Meghalaya, due to the region’s continuous rain for the past 24 hours.

According to the weather service, heavy rains were expected in Meghalaya, Assam, and areas of the northeast.

The deceased identified as 43-year-old Sidres K. Sahnoh who is a resident Jongksha village in Mawkynrew Block.

Aside from the landslide, the Wahumkhrah river, which flows through Demseiniong, was flooded due to heavy rain. PWD, SDRF, and local police were given orders to assess the situation immediately and take any required action to prevent more damage and disruption.

In addition, due to the severe rain, the guard wall of the Border Security Force (BSF) compound at Umpling was partially destroyed. There were no casualties reported.

A wall in Madanriting Block-C is said to have collapsed, throwing debris into the Madan Hindi Patshala School’s adjacent grounds. There were no casualties reported.

According to the authorities, there was also a landslide on Pynursla Road and flooding at Hubert Memorial School in Umpling.
