Meghalaya: Ri-Bhoi Police Distribute Free Helmets as Part of Road Safety Campaign

Shillong: Ahead of Meghalaya Day and Republic Day 2025, Ri-Bhoi police have launched a road safety initiative aimed at raising awareness and promoting safe driving practices across the district. As part of the campaign, free helmets are being distributed to children, women, and elderly residents to encourage helmet use and improve road safety.

The campaign is particularly focused on young recipients, with police officials emphasizing the importance of instilling safe practices at an early age. “If even one life is saved due to these helmets, we will get the ultimate job satisfaction,” said Ri-Bhoi police officers. “Kids are our special targets because if kids understand the importance of wearing helmets, they will make the whole family wear it. These cute kids are actual force multipliers.”

In addition to the helmet distribution, the police department has set up round-the-clock checkpoints to ensure compliance with traffic safety laws, including the mandatory use of helmets for two-wheeler riders and seat belts for light motor vehicles. The initiative also seeks to create a lasting cultural shift toward safer road behavior, especially through younger generations.

Meghalaya’s Chief Minister has shown support for the campaign, sharing the efforts on social media and highlighting the state’s ongoing commitment to road safety. The distribution of helmets and the establishment of checkpoints mark a significant step in the region’s efforts to enhance traffic safety and prevent road accidents.
