Mizoram: Defying Ban on Firecrackers During New Year’s Eve, 28 Arrested

Guwahati: As many as 28 persons have already been arrested in Mizoram and 26 cases have been filed under the jurisdiction of the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) for violating prohibitory orders during the New Year’s celebrations.

According to Aizawl SP C Lalruaia, 16 persons were arrested for possessing and selling fireworks, toy weapons (which might cause bodily damage), and sky lanterns in the Kulikawn, Bawngkawn, and Vaivakawn Police station districts.

He claimed that the Aizawl district magistrate had filed 15 cases in this regard. Three police stations recorded 12 arrests and 11 cases for lighting fireworks on New Year’s Eve. Massive fireworks displays were used to welcome 2023 in Aizawl.

The prohibition on firecrackers and similar products was generally disregarded by revellers in the other (10) district headquarters, with the exception of Khawzawl district headquarters.

A report on the level of noise and air pollution in Aizawl as of December 31 has not yet been released, according to C. Lalduhawma, secretary of the Mizoram state pollution control board (MSPCB).
