MP Biplab Deb of Tripura calls for the opening of the Maitri Bridge immediately

Digital Desk: Former Tripura Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha Member Biplab Kumar Deb called for the quick operationalization of the Indo-Bangladesh Maitri Bridge in the South District of Tripura, which was constructed over the Feni River, during the winter session of Parliament.

Deb has expressed the expectation that the opening of the Maitri bridge will benefit all northeastern states, including Tripura, and boost trade between the two nations.

MP Deb added that on March 9, 2021, Prime Ministers Narendra Modi of India and Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh would essentially open the Maitri bridge, which spans the Feni River and connects the two countries. However, Bangladesh’s land customs station is not yet open for business. The advantages of this crucial project are therefore unavailable.

However, the Maitri Setu has not yet opened despite reports that the state government has contacted the Ministry of External Affairs in this respect.

“All necessary arrangements have already been made from the Indian side. But as the work of Land Customs Station on the Bangladesh side is still incomplete, Maitri Setu cannot be opened”, said Deb.

Deb has asked that the barriers on that side be taken down after consulting with the Bangladeshi government so that at least early passenger mobility can begin.

“Due to non-operation of India-Bangladesh Maitri Bridge, despite permission to use Chittagong and Mongla ports, Tripura is unable to take advantage of this SOP”, he said.
