Nagaland, Assam Agree to Settle Border Dispute

Guwahati: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio after a meeting with his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma said Assam and Nagaland are willing to settle their decades-old border conflict outside of court. Both states have agreed to split royalties on the disputed area’s petroleum.

The development came after the chief ministers of both states met in Guwahati on Sunday to discuss the border problem.

However, in 1988, the government of Assam filed a case in the Supreme Court to resolve the border dispute.

Nagaland Chief Minister stated that a delegation from Assam and Nagaland will meet with Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi in early February to discuss the next steps.

Furthermore, Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu also met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday.
