Nagaland: Centre extends AFSPA for 6 months

Guwahati: The Centre has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in Nagaland for another six months, declaring the state as a disturbed area.

An official notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs stated that the area comprising the whole of the state of Nagaland is in such a disturbing and dangerous condition that the use of armed forces in aid of the Civil power is necessary

It added, “Now, therefore, in the exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (No.28 of 1958) the Central Government hereby declares that whole of the State of Nagaland to be ‘disturbed area’ for a period of six months with effect from 30th December 2021 for the purpose of the said Act.”

Protest across the state for the withdrawal of AFSPA have been going on since the Oting incident took place where the Army officials allegedly killed 14 civilians, mistaking them as insurgents on December 4.
