Nagaland MP S Supongmeren Jamir Calls for AFSPA Revocation Amid Ongoing Ceasefire
Dimapur– Addressing the 78th Foundation Day of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Nagaland’s sole Lok Sabha MP, S Supongmeren Jamir, advocated for the removal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the state, emphasizing that with the peace process underway, the act is no longer necessary.
The event marked a significant call to action by Jamir, highlighting a decades-long demand within the Naga community.
Speaking at the event, Jamir pointed out that with the ongoing ceasefire agreements between the Centre and five Naga political groups since 1997, the region has seen significant steps toward peace.
With dialogue continuing to address the core issues of the Naga political movement, Jamir argued that AFSPA, recently extended in eight districts of Nagaland, undermines the progress made in peacebuilding.
He urged leaders to vocalize opposition to AFSPA and encouraged the Nagaland government to formally approach the Centre to lift the Act.
During his address, Jamir also appealed to senior NSF leaders to maintain their commitment to Naga welfare, urging a continued focus on unity and integrity.
The NSF, founded in 1945, serves as an influential body for Naga rights, representing communities across Nagaland, Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and even parts of Myanmar.
NSF President Medovi Rhi also spoke on the Federation’s historic contributions, celebrating the organization as a symbol of resilience and unity for the Naga people. “Today, we celebrate not only the passage of time but the enduring legacy of unity, resilience, and vision that the NSF represents,” Rhi stated, reinforcing NSF’s role as a beacon of hope and a steadfast voice for the Naga community’s rights and aspirations.
