Nagaon firing incident: Govt orders suspension of police official involved

Guwahati: The state home department has asked the DGP to remove a sub-inspector immediately based on the recommendations of the one-man inquiry commission probing the incident of police firing on a former student leader in central Assam’s Nagaon district.

The government also ordered that all members of the Anti-Narcotic Squad, Nagaon, excluding the SP, be transferred out of Nagaon District immediately.

According to an official statement released on Tuesday, the Assam government has accepted the report of a one-man inquiry commission led by Paban Kr Barthakur, Additional Chief Secretary, Assam.

The Assam government established a one-man inquiry commission on January 23 to look into the incident of police soldiers from the Anti Narcotic Squad firing at Kacholukhowa Tiniali in Nagaon on January 22.

Kirti Kamal Bora, a former general secretary of Nagaon College’s students’ union, was injured in the police firing.

The state Home & Political Department has asked the DGP to conduct a series of actions in response to the inquiry committee’s recommendations, according to the statement.

The home department has asked the DGP of Assam to take immediate steps to dismantle the current Anti Narcotic Squad formed by the SP of Nagaon, the statement read.

The government has also ordered that the two cases be transferred to the CID based on the FIR lodged by ABSI Pradeep Bania and Nilkamal Bora.

A senior police official has also directed him to conduct a departmental investigation into the role played by each and every police officer involved in the incident.

DGP Assam has ordered Pradeep Bania, ABSI, to be suspended immediately and all members of the Anti-Narcotic Squad, Nagaon, other than SP Nagaon and ABSI Pradeep Bania, to be transferred out of Nagaon District immediately.

In addition, the DGP of Assam is being urged to ensure the safety and protection of the case’s witnesses.

The police force is also being requested to take steps to raise public awareness about drug usage and to guarantee that all drug-related matters are handled according to the law.

The DGP is also required to send a report on the actions taken to the Home and Political Department as soon as possible, the statement further added.
