No weight to class 12 marks, mandatory entrance test for UG

Guwahati: The first-ever mandatory common entrance test for admission to undergraduate programmes in all 45 Central universities, according to UGC head M Jagadesh Kumar, would be held in the first week of July.

On Tuesday, the National Testing Agency (NTA) would release the test pattern, he said. The National Testing Agency will administer the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), a computerised exam (NTA). The application window for the examination will open in the first week of April.

The results of the Class 12 Board will have no weight on admission to UG courses in Central Universities.

According to Kumar, entrance to these colleges’ undergraduate programmes would now be solely based on the CUET score, with Class 12 Board scores having no bearing.

Colleges can, at best, use the outcomes of the Board exam as a test eligibility criteria, he said.

This effectively means that a student’s Class 12 Board test score will no longer be taken into account when applying to Central universities. To put it another way, the sky-high cut-off marks at Delhi University are now a thing of the past. In order to accept students to a total of ten programmes this year, seven DU institutions have asked 100 percent marks in the initial list.

According to a government official, the government does not favour using Board results in admissions.

The government does not favour using Board results for admittance because of the “variety” in evaluation procedures.

It may be mentioned that there will be no common counselling after the CUET, and each university will admit candidates based on a merit list issued by NTA.
