PM Modi Inquires About Safety of Affected Residents In Joshimath Subsidence

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought information on Sunday regarding the actions taken for the affected residents of Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s safety and rehabilitation in the aftermath of a soil subsidence disaster in the area.

According to reports, PM Modi called Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and asked about the status of short- and long-term action plans to allay and address residents’ worries.

In a statement from Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) read, “Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi spoke to the Chief Minister Shri @pushkardhami on the phone today and inquired about the steps taken for the safety and rehabilitation of the affected and the progress of the immediate and long-term action plan to solve the problem in the context of Joshimath.”

It further stated that the PM was personally keeping an eye on the local situation and the ongoing efforts to protect the population. He promised Joshimath will receive all aid available.

The PMO had earlier stated that it would host a high-level meeting on Sunday afternoon in response to residents of Chamoli district camping outside at Joshimath due to their concerns for their safety as a result of the land sinking.

“Principal Secretary to PM P K Mishra will hold a high-level review with the Cabinet Secretary and senior officials of Government and members of National Disaster Management Authority at PMO today afternoon,” an official release said.

Joshimath district officials used video conferencing to attend the conference.

Senior Uttarakhand authorities reportedly participated in the review through video conference as well.

The gathering was called due to cracks appearing in several local homes over the past few days.

Meanwhile, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami ordered the establishment of a coordination committee at the local and federal levels of government, chaired by the commissioner of Garhwal, to coordinate the urgent relief and rescue efforts for the civilians affected by the Joshimath landslide and subsidence.
