President Murmu Conferred With Suriname’s Highest Civilian Award

National Desk, 6 June: President Droupadi Murmu has been conferred the highest civilian honour of Suriname – the “Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star”. President Murmu received the honour from Chandrikapersad Santokhi, President of the Republic of Suriname on Monday.

Droupadi Murmu declared after getting the honour that it was really meaningful to her.

The President of Inida, in a tweet said, “I am greatly honoured to receive Suriname’s highest distinction, “Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star.” This recognition holds tremendous significance, not only for me but also for the 1.4 billion people of India whom I represent. I also dedicate this honor to the successive generations of the Indian-Surinamese community, who have played a stellar role in enriching the fraternal ties between our two countries.”Droupadi Murmu arrived in Paramaribo, Suriname on June 4. Murmu was received by the President Chandrikapersad Santokhi at the Johan Adolf Pengel International airport with full state honours.

Murmur and the president of Suriname also had delegation-level discussions. Both Presidents held extensive conversations on a variety of topics, including military, agriculture, information technology, and capacity building as well as strategies to further India-Suriname relations. Additionally, four Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) in a number of areas including agriculture and health were exchanged by the two nations.

Additionally, special stamp covers commemorating the 150th anniversary of Indian immigration to Suriname were given to President Murmu at the celebration.

The President further said, “Receiving this decoration during the historic commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Indian arrival in Suriname makes it more special. If this honor serves as a beacon of empowerment and encouragement for women in both our countries, then it becomes even more meaningful.”

Droupadi Murmu arrived in Paramaribo, Suriname on June 4. Murmu was welcomed by President Chandrikapersad Santokhi with full state honours at the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport.
