‘Record’ Sales Across the State During New year Eve!

Guwahati: The sale of alcohol increased significantly throughout the New Year’s holiday in Guwahati.

Alcohol worth more than Rs 8 crore was reportedly sold on December 31 and January 1 in Kamrup Metro.

While alcohol was sold for Rs 4.80 crore on December 31, alcohol amounting to Rs 3.21 crores was consumed on January 1.

The city saw a rise in the demand for alcohol on Friday, December 30 which peaked the following day.

Fortunately, throughout this time there were no significant incidents or accidents reported in the city. Prior to the start of the year-end festivities, Guwahati’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Hiranya Kumar Barman, issued a warning to the public urging them not to drink and drive.

With the aim to keep drunk driving and road accidents to the minimum, DCP Barman urged citizens to refrain from rash driving.

He said, “I urge the people of Guwahati to adhere to road rules and wear seatbelts while driving. There have been 375 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol registered between December 20 to 24 itself.”

In addition, DCP Barman released a number of warnings before the New Year.
