Rs 66 Crore Road Project in Mizoram Withdrawn Due to Land Issues; NIT Mizoram Receives Rs 669 Crore for Campus Development

Northeast Desk, 9th August: Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Dr. Sukanta Majumdar revealed that the Rs 66.08 crore sanctioned for the Sangau to Saisih road project in Mizoram has been withdrawn. The decision was made due to the state’s inability to provide land free of charge by June 2024. The Border Road Organisation (BRO) was initially tasked with the project.

In a related development, Dr. Majumdar also announced that the central government has allocated Rs 669.75 crore for the construction of a permanent campus for the National Institute of Technology (NIT) at Lengpui. The project, part of the BRO’s Thingsai to Pangkhua-Sangau Road initiative, will now be funded under the General Staff (GS) scheme. The NIT Mizoram, which began in 2010, currently has 668 students.
