Several Karimganj Dist Jail Inmates Hospitalized After Hunger Strike in Assam

Guwahati: Following a four-day hunger strike, at least 22 inmates of the Karimganj district jail in Assam were ill and had to be hospitalized.

The Karimganj Civil Hospital has taken on the ailing inmates from the jail.

According to sources, nine detainees on Thursday were hospitalized due to health issues after becoming seriously ill.

Officials from the district health department claimed that they have a number of health issues, including dehydration.

More than a hundred people who were detained in Karimganj under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act have been demanding bail while participating in an ongoing hunger strike since Tuesday morning.

The detainees had earlier sought bail in an effort to establish their guilt.

Additionally, the inmates claimed that they were being treated inhumanely by the jail staff and that over 500 inmates were being housed in cells designed to hold 170 people.
