Shiva Thapa Returns Home with Gold Medal After Winning National Boxing Championship

Guwahati: Assam’s top fighter Shiva Thapa, who won the gold medal in the National Boxing Championship, arrived in Guwahati on Sunday.

Thapa landed at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) in Guwahati from Hisar in Haryana where he made Assam proud with his gold winning stand.

Participating in the Elite Men’s National Boxing Championship was the boxer from Assam. He defeated Ankit Narwal in the 63.5 kilos division finals to win the gold medal.

Shiva Thapa, along with Hussamuddin and Narender, was one of the tournament favourites when the final was contested on Friday (January 6) in Hisar.

The bronze medallist at the 2021 World Youth Championships, Narwal, squared off against Thapa, a six-time Asian medalist. Narwal was soundly thrashed, and the Assamese boxer elegantly clinched the gold.

It should be mentioned that on January 5, in Hisar, Shiva Thapa won a thrilling semifinal match against Manish Kaushik, who had won the bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships, to proceed to the championship match of the sixth elite men’s national boxing championships.

Assam’s Thapa and Services Sports Control Board’s (SSCB) Kaushik have previously faced off against each other on a number of times, and this matchup was no exception. Starting out aggressively from the get-go, neither pugilist held back in demonstrating their power or establishing their superiority over the other. As the fight went on, Thapa used his knowledge to gain the upper hand by anticipating his opponent’s assaults and dodging them with his quick feet while delivering more precise punches.
