Sikkim CM Announces Major Initiatives for Drivers at Sarathi Samman Diwas

Northeast Desk, 2nd August: In a series of pivotal announcements at the Sarathi Samman Diwas event at Mannan Kendra, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang outlined new measures aimed at improving driver welfare and refining vehicle regulations.

The Chief Minister revealed a significant update to the Pollution Under Control (PUC) certification fine. Previously set at Rs 10,000, the fine for non-compliance has now been reduced to Rs 500. However, Tamang emphasized the importance of timely updates to the PUC certificates, warning that the fine will revert to Rs 10,000 if not complied with within 15 days. “While the fine has decreased, adherence to regulations remains crucial,” Tamang stated.

Recognizing the demanding nature of drivers’ work, Tamang announced that health and life insurance will now be provided to all drivers. This initiative is designed to address the long hours and limited family time drivers often face. “We understand the sacrifices drivers make, and this insurance is a step towards securing their health and well-being,” he said. The Sikkim Chalak Welfare Board will manage the necessary paperwork and documentation for this new benefit.

In an effort to address transportation issues, Tamang declared that Sikkim residents with voter ID cards will be permitted to drive luxury vehicles. This new policy, supported by an agreement with the West Bengal government, aims to increase the quota of luxury vehicle permits. “Our government is committed to expanding access and reducing middlemen’s influence in the vehicle allocation process,” Tamang explained.

Looking towards the future, Tamang detailed plans to distribute 100 taxi vehicles to professional drivers through the Chief Minister’s fund, with the government covering the downpayment to ensure these vehicles are used for livelihood purposes. “We plan to purchase 400 vehicles, with 100 being directly allocated to the Chalak Welfare Board to support drivers in need,” he added.

The Chief Minister also announced a substantial increase in funding for various welfare boards, including the Chalak Welfare Board. A total of Rs 1 crore has been allocated, with Rs 50,000 designated for immediate disbursement. “Today marks a historic day for Sikkim’s development and driver welfare,” Tamang concluded.

These initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to enhancing the lives of drivers and ensuring better regulatory practices for vehicles in Sikkim.
