Northeast Desk, 10th August: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, addressing the 7th Jan Unmukti Diwas celebration, reflected on his past imprisonment and reaffirmed his dedication to the state’s progress. During his speech, Tamang recounted the year he spent in confinement from August 10, 2017, to August 10, 2018, and expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support he received from the people of Sikkim during that challenging time.
Tamang vividly described his experience in cell number 5, where he faced harsh conditions and poor food. Despite the adversity, he emphasized that the encouragement from his supporters made his time in prison more bearable. “The love and support from you all made those 365 days seem less daunting. It felt as though I was not alone,” Tamang shared with the audience.
He credited the solidarity shown by the people as a pivotal factor in his journey from prison to politics. Although he never aspired to become Chief Minister, Tamang stated that his primary focus has always been to serve and improve Sikkim. “If I had dreamt solely of becoming CM, I might not have achieved success. My focus was always on bringing positive change,” he said.
Looking ahead, Tamang promised to continue working diligently for the betterment of Sikkim, emphasizing transparency and integrity in his administration. He contrasted his government’s approach with that of the previous administration, vowing that under his leadership, Sikkim would not face corruption or dictatorial governance. “The people have chosen a government committed to honesty and progress,” he asserted.
Tamang also addressed the challenges faced by journalists under the previous SDF government, particularly regarding media freedom. He expressed appreciation for the resilience of the media and assured them of greater respect and benefits under his administration, underscoring their vital role in society.
