Sikkim Government Evacuates 28 Stranded People from North Sikkim
Gangtok: The Sikkim government successfully evacuated 28 people, including three minors, who were stranded in North Sikkim’s Chaten due to multiple landslides triggered by heavy rain. The administration hired a helicopter to rescue them after receiving distress calls from locals, taxi drivers, and government officials stationed in Chaten.
The helicopter sortie began early in the morning from Pakyong Greenfield Airport, and all evacuees have landed safely. This evacuation is part of the ongoing relief efforts undertaken by the state government in response to the adverse weather conditions that have disrupted road connectivity and access to the region.
North Sikkim has been severely affected by multiple landslides, disrupting road and telecommunication connectivity. Earlier this week, rescue operations were conducted to evacuate around 2,000 tourists stranded in Lachen, Lachung, and Chungthang towns. The region has also witnessed a tragic incident where three army personnel were killed, four injured, and six others went missing after a landslide hit a military camp at Chaten on June 1. Efforts are currently underway to locate the missing soldiers.
The state government remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens in disaster-affected regions. The successful evacuation of the 28 people is a testament to the government’s efforts to respond to the crisis and provide assistance to those in need.
