Two live Chinese pangolin seized in Assam’s Sonitpur; 2 held

Guwahati: In the ongoing war against poaching initiated by the Assam government, Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) arrested two persons in the connection and seized two live Chinese pangolins on Saturday.

Based on intelligence inputs conducted a joint operation by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), Guwahati and Chariduwar Range of Sonitpur west Division at Potasali, Balipara – Bhalukpung Road.

The seizure took place at the Potasali of Sonitpur district of Assam.

According to reports, seized pangolins scales of 9.500 KG and 2.900 KG along with the arrest of the two accused in the district.

The arrested accused identified as Karlin Mangfi and Gyan Bahadur Chetry. Both of the them is a resident of Sonitpur district.

Reportedly, the pangolins were brought in from the Sepa district of Arunachal Pradesh. They often caught pangolin for eating as meat.

Legal action has been initiated into the matter and further investigation is underway into the matter.

It may be mentioned that the State Government’s success in curbing poaching of the one-horned rhinoceros seems to have turned the attention of poachers to another unique animal species of the North-East, the pangolin.
