Assam Gears Up for Second Phase of Lok Sabha Elections: Key Battlegrounds and Dynamics

Guwahati, 25th April: As Assam braces for the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for April 26, anticipation rises across the state, with five crucial constituencies poised to cast their votes. Karimganj, Silchar, Nagaon, Diphu, and Darrang emerge as focal points of political activity, each presenting its unique dynamics and challenges.

Karimganj:

With its substantial Muslim population accounting for approximately 65%, Karimganj embodies a complex political terrain. Traditionally a Congress and AIUDF stronghold, the BJP’s victory in 2019 marked a significant shift, propelled by support from Hindu and other voters. The recent delimitation adds a new dimension to the contest, intensifying campaign efforts from major parties.

Silchar:

Silchar, characterized by a dominant Bengali voter base, witnesses a protracted battle between the BJP and Congress. Historically aligned with Congress, the BJP’s ascendance has injected new vigor into the electoral landscape. The entry of TMC further complicates the dynamics, setting the stage for an intriguing showdown.

Nowgong:

Reflecting Assam’s diverse demographics, Nowgong emerges as another hotly contested constituency. With a sizable Muslim population, the BJP intensifies efforts to consolidate its support base, while Congress strives to maintain its traditional stronghold. The presence of AIUDF adds layers to an already tightly contested race.

Diphu/Autonomous District:

Reserved for Scheduled Tribes, Diphu epitomizes the mosaic of tribal communities in Assam. As BJP, Congress, and ASDC vie for dominance, the electoral dynamics reflect the region’s unique socio-political fabric, presenting a complex tableau of interests and aspirations.

Darrang-Udalguri:

A blend of Bodo, Koch-Rajbongshi, and other communities, Darrang-Udalguri emerges as a battleground constituency. With BJP, Congress, and BPF in contention, the electoral contest unfolds across multiple fronts, as each party seeks to secure crucial segments of the electorate.

As polling teams and Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are dispatched for the second phase, Assam braces for a keenly contested electoral showdown, with the political landscape primed for dynamic shifts and decisive outcomes.
