Assam: Illegal Migratory Duck Trade rescued by Dhubri Sadar Police
Guwahati, 3rd February: In a successful operation, Dhubri Sadar police personnel intercepted and rescued fifteen migratory Ruddy shelducks from an overcrowded area near the Dhubri municipality’s boundary. The police discovered the ducks in two bamboo baskets intended for commercial use. The rescued ducks were identified as Ruddy shelducks (Tadorna ferruginea).
The police intervention prevented an illegal dealer from transporting the ducks for potential sale. The police handed over the recovered ducks to the Dhubri district’s forest department. The divisional forest office of Dhubri safely received and temporarily housed the ducks on Friday night.
Sofikur Rahman, the forest range officer of the Dhubri forest division, mentioned that the fifteen Ruddy shelducks were released into their natural habitat in the Brahmaputra River early on Saturday morning. These migratory ducks visit the Brahmaputra River in Dhubri during the winter.
Crimes involving the illegal trade of migratory birds and ducks are not uncommon in the region. In response to such incidents, forest officials have initiated an inquiry to address and prevent such illegal activities in the future. The crackdown aims to protect migratory birds and uphold wildlife conservation efforts in the area.
