Assam: Jorhat Constituency Emerges as Crucial Battleground for Congress and BJP in State

Guwahati, 18th April: In the upcoming Lok Sabha election in Assam, the Jorhat constituency has become a focal point for the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), evolving into a battleground of significant political importance.

The rivalry between the two parties has intensified, with Assam Chief Minister and BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma leading a rally in Sivasagar, within the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency, highlighting the strategic significance of the area in Assam’s political landscape.

Congress’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, is facing a personal battle in Jorhat, as the election will determine whether he secures a seat in the elected House.

Gaurav Gogoi, shifting his focus to Jorhat due to a recent delimitation exercise, is up against BJP’s Topon Kumar Gogoi, in a contest holding deep personal significance, especially considering the seat’s symbolic value for the Congress.

The battle in Jorhat represents a clash of legacies and personal ambitions within the political sphere of Assam, epitomized by the animosity between Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tarun Gogoi, Gaurav Gogoi’s father.

Despite the weight of his father’s legacy and the backing of the Congress party, Gaurav Gogoi faces an uphill battle in Jorhat, where the electorate will cast their votes on April 19, deciding the fate of this closely-watched political contest.
