Assam: Manager Arrested in Connection with Umrangso Rat-Hole Coal Mine Disaster
Assam: The Assam Police have arrested Hanan Laskar, a manager linked to the recent rat-hole coal mine disaster in Umrangso, Dima Hasao district.
Laskar, employed by the mine owner, was responsible for managing miners’ payments. His arrest is a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the illegal mining operation that led to the tragedy.
The disaster, which occurred on January 6, has drawn widespread attention, with fifteen labourers reportedly trapped inside the coal mine in the 3 Kilo area of Umrangso after water flooded the site. Rescue efforts are ongoing as authorities work tirelessly to save the miners.
An FIR has been registered under Umrangso PS Case No: 02/2025, citing Sections 3(5)/105 BNS and Section 21(1) of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957. The case also includes charges under additional provisions related to illegal mining and unsafe practices.
Police have identified the operation as likely illegal and have already arrested another individual, Punish Nunisa, in connection with the case. Authorities are intensifying their efforts to uncover more details about those involved in the mine’s operations.
The incident has sparked widespread criticism of unsafe working conditions and the prevalence of illegal mining practices in the region. Calls for stricter enforcement of anti-rat-hole mining laws and improved safety measures for labourers have gained momentum following the tragedy.
Preliminary findings suggest the mine was operating without necessary approvals, raising questions about regulatory oversight. Officials are working to identify other individuals and entities responsible for the illegal operation.
The Umrangso disaster has highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to ensure the safety of labourers working in hazardous environments. Further updates on the rescue efforts and investigation are awaited as authorities continue their probe into the incident.
