Bangladesh Interim Government Assures India of Stable Bilateral Relations Amid Sheikh Hasina’s Extended Stay

International Desk, 13th August: Md Touhid Hossain, Foreign Affairs Adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, has asserted that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s extended stay in India will not impact the bilateral relationship between the two countries. Hossain emphasized that Dhaka is committed to maintaining strong relations with New Delhi, underscoring that the presence of an individual in a particular country does not dictate the dynamics of international relations.

In a recent media interaction, Hossain remarked that “friendship does not exist if the interest is hurt,” dismissing concerns that Hasina’s stay in India could strain ties. He further elaborated that both Bangladesh and India have distinct national interests, and their relationship is governed by mutual benefits rather than the presence of any single leader.

Sheikh Hasina, after stepping down as Prime Minister, left Bangladesh for India amidst unrest sparked by a controversial quota system in government jobs. Despite this, Hossain reiterated that the relationship between Bangladesh and India would continue to thrive based on shared interests, independent of Hasina’s location.

Hossain also briefed diplomats in Dhaka, including Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma, on the current situation in Bangladesh, seeking their continued support for the interim government. He assured that the interim government is committed to addressing the expectations of the people and facilitating a smooth transition to an “inclusive and pluralistic electoral democracy.”

Hossain accused the former Awami League government of committing human rights violations, which he claims led to its downfall. He expressed confidence that the international community would back the interim government’s efforts to chart a new future for Bangladesh.

The adviser concluded by emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic ties and ensuring that Bangladesh’s foreign policy remains stable and beneficial for its people, even during this transitional period.
