Chandra Kamal Gogoi, Renowned Artist and Descendant of Ahom Hero Lachit Borphukan, Passes Away at 78

Guwahati, 13th August: Chandra Kamal Gogoi, a distinguished artist and direct descendant of Assam’s legendary Ahom hero Lachit Borphukan, died on Tuesday morning at the age of 78. He succumbed to age-related illnesses while being treated at Lakhimpur Medical College Hospital.

Gogoi, a celebrated figure in the art world, graduated from Shanti Niketan in West Bengal, showcasing his exceptional talent and gaining notable respect within the art community. He founded Kala Niketan, a fine arts school in Lakhimpur, where he inspired and mentored emerging artists. Additionally, Gogoi was instrumental in designing postal stamps for the Department of Posts, further marking his creative contributions.

His legacy is deeply tied to his royal lineage as a descendant of Lachit Borphukan, the revered Ahom general who triumphed over the Mughals in the Battle of Saraighat. Gogoi’s artistic and cultural impact is profound, contributing significantly to Assam’s heritage.

Former President APJ Abdul Kalam recognized Gogoi’s dedication during a hunger strike protesting the closure of an art institute, honoring him with a Luna moped. In 2022, Gogoi received the Bishnu Prasad Rabha Award for his lifelong contributions to art.

Chandra Kamal Gogoi’s passing concludes an era, leaving a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of artists.
