Manipur CM N Biren Singh Rejects Directive to Ban Meitei Mayek Script in Schools
Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has firmly rejected the Hill Tribal Council’s (HTC) recent directive to remove the Meitei Mayek script from school syllabi in Moreh town, asserting that the state is governed by its government and not by external organisations.
Addressing the media, Singh responded to the HTC’s order, which proposed banning the teaching of Manipuri/Meitei Mayek as a subject in schools starting from the 2025-2026 academic year.
The HTC’s education department had suggested students adopt alternative Modern Indian Languages such as Hindi, English, Mizo, Thadou, Hmar, Zou, Maring, Anal, Vaiphei, Paite, or Gangte.
“There are many organisations. Hill Tribal Council and blah blah… we don’t care. We take seriously those recognised organisations. The state is governed by government, not by any individual,” Singh stated emphatically.
The directive, which stirred controversy, has been dismissed by the Chief Minister as lacking legitimacy. Singh reaffirmed the government’s authority in determining educational policies and maintaining inclusivity in the state’s school curriculum.
Speaking on the occasion of Manipur’s 54th Statehood Day, Singh extended his gratitude to national leaders for their wishes and expressed optimism about peace returning to the state. He urged all communities to work together towards restoring normalcy in the region, calling for unity and cooperation during challenging times.
