Meghalaya: South West Garo Hills Observes World Suicide Prevention Day with Awareness Event

Northeast Desk, 10th September: The District Mental Health Program (DMHP) of South West Garo Hills on September 10 hosted an event at the Chengkompara Adolescent Health Resource Centre to mark World Suicide Prevention Day. Themed “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” the event aimed to enhance awareness about mental health and suicide prevention.

The Chief Guest, Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar, addressed the growing influence of social media on youth mental health, highlighting associated risks. Dr. AK Marak, BDO of Purakhasia C&RD Block, and Dr. Denisha Momin, Medical Superintendent of Ampati Civil Hospital, emphasized the need for mental health education and prevention efforts.

Students and teachers from St. Claret Secondary School and Ampati Government Higher Secondary School participated in various activities, including Extempore Speech, Role Play, and Poster Making. Prizes were awarded to the winners during the event.

Throughout the week, the DMHP organized awareness programs focusing on mental health resources and suicide prevention, reinforcing the community’s role in addressing mental health issues.
