Northeast Desk, 3rd April: The Excise and Narcotics Department in Aizawl achieved a significant breakthrough on Wednesday, seizing over 5 kgs of heroin in a coordinated operation. This marks the second substantial drug interception within two days by narcotics officials.

Acting on intelligence inputs, authorities conducted a raid at Aizawl View, Falkland locality, resulting in the confiscation of 5.427 kgs of heroin. The contraband was discovered in the possession of Lalnunmawia, alias Puia (38), a resident of Teidu, Tripura, currently residing in Aizawl. Another individual involved in the incident is Lalchawiliana (34), a resident of Khampat Kanaan, Myanmar, currently residing in Vairengte town.

Interrogation of the apprehended individuals revealed that the heroin had been smuggled from Myanmar, concealed within a Second Hand (Thrift clothes) Bale. In addition to the narcotics, officials also seized a TATA YODHA truck with registration number MZ01 V-2018, which was utilized for transporting the illegal drugs.

Both Lalnunmawia and Lalchawiliana have been charged under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act 1984 and are set to appear in court. If convicted, they could face imprisonment ranging from 10 to 20 years, along with a fine ranging from 1 to 2 lakhs.

This development follows the arrest of two Myanmar nationals on Tuesday in connection with similar drug-related offenses, highlighting the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat the narcotics trade in the region.
