Assam CM Highlights Demographic Concerns During Independence Day Speech

Guwahati, 15th August: On Independence Day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma raised alarm over the state’s demographic shifts, stating that the future of Assam is “not secure” due to the changing population balance between Hindus and Muslims.

Sarma, speaking at the celebration where he hoisted the national flag, expressed concerns that indigenous communities are feeling defensive as they become minorities in 12-13 districts. He noted that the Muslim population had increased to 41% in 2021, while the Hindu population had decreased to 57%, with other communities, including Christians, making up the remainder.

Emphasizing the importance of family planning and awareness of polygamy, Sarma called for all communities to adhere to these norms. He stressed the need for a strong state government to protect the interests of indigenous people and affirmed his commitment to their welfare.
